The weekends are just 5 weeks away, and our first Team Formation is this Saturday, September 12th, at the Sturgis Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
Formation is not only beginning for the Teams. The entire community now enters a season of preparation: some preparing to serve on the team, some considering whom God may be calling them to invite, and all of us preparing to serve, sacrifice, and pray. I am reminded daily of the number and variety of folks it takes to meet the needs of this great ministry of spiritual renewal God has established. I am thankful for each of you and your commitment to accept a share in this work. The apostle Paul taught that we are only servants assigned tasks by the Lord in the hope that someone might come to believe.
1 Corinthians 3:6-9 6 I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow. 7 So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow. 8 The one who plants and the one who waters have one purpose, and they will each be rewarded according to their own labor. 9 For we are co-workers in God’s service; you are God’s field, God’s building.
Before I go further, let me share two immediate items:

This Saturday is our September Ultreya; details below. Note: Jason and I will share during our fellowship time regarding our Peoria Cursillo weekend.
As weekend activities begin in earnest, and it has been some time since we have been together as a community, there is a longing for our fellowship. A return to the routine of Cursillo, free from the challenges our last set of weekends came with.
Here are some of those normal Cursillo routine items to focus on:
Pray for Jon and Krissie and the teams God has provided.
Pray for and ask the candidate God has pointed out to you.
Pray and sign up for acts of service and sacrifice.
Check our Facebook page more often as the weekends approach.
The following are two additional areas your Cursillo could use some help with.
SPECIAL NEW ITEMS
With the addition of the shower cart and our own beds comes a need for attention and maintenance for both. We are considering naming 2-3 people who can lead these efforts.
Holding weekends in a beautiful, active Church has increased our desire and need to clean and restore after the weekends for their uninterrupted use. We are considering having a team of volunteers who come after the weekend for a good cleaning and straightening. Honestly, it needs to be mostly individuals who did not work on the weekend, so this group will change every weekend.
These are new needs. For now, if you are willing to help, reach out to me or Jason as we get started.
It can seem like a tremendous effort to accomplish all that is required to have two simple weekends. It is always possible because it is The Lord who assigns the one to plant and one to water. We, the co-workers, can trust that God will take our faithful efforts and grow The kingdom, our faith, and His Cursillo.

Secretariat Board Meeting May 21, 2026 Members Present: Stacy Baker, Jason Buckman, Frank Cates, Grover Fischbeck, Mark Floyd, Debbie Hollowell, Jim Lyon, Clay Norman, Kenny Quinton, Randy Trent, Joey Willett, Sharon Willett Members Absent: Blair Lamb, Barbara Thomas Guest: Cameron Grindall Meditation: Jason Buckman spoke from Exodus 20 on the Ten Commandments—God’s standard. These standards should make us recognize how holy He is. What would our world look like if we held the Ten Commandments in high regard? God gave us this law. Jesus said, if you love Me, keep My commandments. Because of His grace, we should want to live differently. We should want to live by His standard. Minutes: Minutes for April 2026 were read and approved after a motion by Grover Fischbeck and a second by Frank Cates. Treasurer’s Report: No formal report presented. Our current balance is approximately $9,000.00. Food costs averaged $2,500.00 for each weekend. The costs for the shower trailer went over budget. The general fund was used (approximately $3,000.00) to pay for the overage. This was expended without prior board approval. Time was of the essence in completing the shower trailer. Apologies were made and assurances provided that it would be handled differently should such a situation ever arise again. Pre Cursillo Report: None Post Cursillo Report: Next scheduled Ultreya is June 13 at Cairo Methodist Church. Palanca Report: None Spiritual Director Report: Weekends went well. Bro. Wayne Duke was very sick on the women’s weekend. Another Catholic deacon is interested in working Cursillo weekends, if we are interested in him coming. This could help extend their stay at the weekend. In recent years, it has not been possible for Deacon Mike Marsili to be present for the entire weekend due to his commitments to serving three parishes throughout the weekend. The board and Jason remain committed to always maintaining Catholic Clergy involvement in our weekends if possible. Latitude in the amount of time expected to be present for the weekend will continue. A Catholic clergy presence represents the Cursillo founding, our ecumenical commitment, and allows Catholic candidates and team to take communion.
Old Business: None New Business:
Cameron Grindall requested the board consider allowing the shower trailer to be used for outreach. He would be spearheading a ministry to the tent city in Owensboro. He would monitor the shower trailer at all times—eyes on it monitoring. There’s a lot for the board to consider—insurance, permits, and other specifics. Many praises for his mission-minded initiative. Sharon Willett will begin researching the board’s questions and concerns. Sharon will be the board contact for this.
Weekend Review: Kenny Quinton provided a Webb Memorial Weekend Feedback Summary for board review (see attached). Other concerns raised involved the smaller kitchen and cleaning up after meals. It was suggested that an emphasis be placed on these tasks as server instructions are given. Additionally, some basic expectations could be added to online server sign-up. Enthusiasm to serve and support the weekend brought many to help. So much so it was questioned if there were too many at times. This is a wonderful problem to have, and time will tell if any adjustments are needed. Another item to convey is that, with all activities now being under one roof, guests need to remain in serving areas, not entering areas adjacent to the conference room or church except for Candlelight, Closing, or as a talk prayer partner.
Candlelight and communion had a few moments that created bottlenecks. Jason listened to feedback and will adjust.
The setup and teardown for Webb requires a lot more work than our prior location. There is also detailed cleaning that is needed for the church after both sets of weekends. Discussion on having a group of volunteers prearranged for setup and teardown of the weekends, including the possibility of both shepherd teams working together to create the group. Further discussion on having a second group dedicated to the detail clean after the teardown from the weekend or even bringing in a separate person/company/group for that task.
Reunion Group Chair: There is currently a vacancy for the reunion group chair. There has been interest, and there are some possibilities for filling the role.
Future Plans: BIAC is still waiting. He was told to let us get through the weekends, then we would circle back. We’ve never fully walked out our future plans—we’ve discussed things, but never definitively chosen a path. We will set up a meeting over the summer with BIAC to discuss. Joey Willett, Blair Lamb, and others will arrange.
Motion made by Grover Fischbeck and seconded by Randy Trent to file for tax-exempt status. Motion passed unanimously. [A note: This is a separate issue from filing for recognition as a 501c3 organization.]
Motion made by Clay Norman and seconded by Grover Fischbeck to give Webb Memorial the sum of $2,000.00 in gratitude for allowing us to hold weekends at their church. Motion passed unanimously. This gift is specific to this set of weekends.
The shower trailer is in Sullivan, stored on Trey Hodge’s property. The warmer is also being stored in Sullivan. A new refrigerator is coming for Cursillo. Webb does not really need the refrigerator, but Cursillo does. Discussion was held about storing the refrigerator with the warmer.
With no further business, the meeting was adjourned after a motion by Grover Fischbeck and seconded by Frank Cates.
