Let me start by asking for your attention to both the immediate and the important.
The immediate is the opportunity to gather in fellowship at the February Ultreya this Saturday, February 8, at Chapel Hill Church in Henderson. You can find the details below or view the FaceBook invite.
The important item to consider is the call for team members to serve on the Men’s and Women’s teams.
Guidelines to Consider Before Applying for a Team
- If you are facing serious personal challenges—whether in your marriage, with alcohol or drugs, or in any other area of life—please do not accept the responsibility of being a team member at this time.
- Be prepared to attend ALL spiritual formation meetings. (If you miss two meetings, you will need to step down from the team.)
- A team member should be fully committed to the formation process and willing to give of themselves completely.
Now, a few thoughts on weekends in general, our role in them, and why they are consistently impactful… One of my favorite descriptions of the Cursillo was often said by our friend and longtime Spiritual Director of this movement, Gary Turner. He would describe the Cursillo to be “one part miracle and one part method.” I love this description because it reminds us that while we faithfully follow the method, we ultimately rely on God for the miracle. I love the ways of the Cursillo, the dynamics of each day, and the inspired methods behind each element. I don’t see the detailed schedule with its constant expectations and guidance as a burden but rather like a treasured family recipe anticipated and enjoyed every time it is meticulously prepared and served. The miracle, on the other hand, is the Holy Spirit sweeping across the weekend, transforming lives in ways we cannot control and may not predict but we have the privilege to witness the transformed lives.
John 3:8 The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.
Of course, our role is not to manufacture the miracle but to prepare the space where the Spirit of God can move freely.
Zechariah 4:6 – “Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord Almighty
This seems like a good time to ask, where are you going Kenny? I am simply trying to encourage each of us to trust this old Cursillo method and the ancient Spirit of God to be more than enough as we approach these weekends with Great Confidence.
If you are a team member, attend all formations, and study your job description and weekend dynamics. If you are sponsoring a candidate prepare them well and understand your role in supporting them. If you are planning on signing up for the serving or prayer charts, do so with a glad heart knowing the candidates will benefit from your sacrifice. On and on, there are tangible ways guided by proven methods where we can support these weekends. But when we come to the end of what we know to do, we must wait for the miracle. Like the believers at Pentecost, who had done all they knew to do, we will prepare faithfully and then wait expectantly for God’s movement. Acts 2:2-4 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
The formations will be here soon enough, followed by our spring weekends. What an exciting time for us to faithfully prepare ourselves in every way while accepting our great need for Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith Hebrews 12:1-2
